In 1987 El Dorado Hills had one other dentist. Dr. Jim Cope and his wife Kimberly opened the second. Their two sons run it now, Kimberly still manages the office, and some of the people in these chairs are the grandchildren of the first patients.

Two brothers, one family practice.

Both went to Brigham Young University and then to dental school at Case Western Reserve, and both went on to advanced implant training. Dr. Ben joined the practice in 2013. Dr. Austin came home from his own practice in Nevada in 2020.

Brigham Young University, then dental school at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, where he was chosen to help train new students in surgical technique and volunteered at the Cleveland Free Clinic. Certified by the California Implant Institute in advanced implant placement. He owned his own practice in Sparks, Nevada, before coming home to El Dorado Hills in 2020 to work alongside his brother.

Brigham Young University, then dental school at Case Western Reserve, where he founded a humanitarian dental outreach to Peru that went on to treat hundreds of people. A residency at the University of Utah followed, with advanced training in placing implants, IV sedation and care for patients with disabilities. He joined the family practice in 2013.

“Old-fashioned service with high-tech quality” is how Kimberly Cope once described the practice. Here is what that means in the chair.

Sedation, with a nurse beside you

The problem: people so afraid of the dentist that they live with pain rather than book.

Both doctors and Kimberly Cope, a registered nurse, are trained in IV sedation. You breathe on your own, feel very sleepy, and usually remember little or nothing. Kimberly does nothing but watch your vital signs while the dentist works, and a large treatment plan can often be done in one or very few visits. Nitrous and oral sedation cover lighter cases, and a local team of anesthesiologists is on hand when general anaesthesia is needed.

A crown in one visit

The problem: a temporary crown, a second appointment, and a second round of numbing.

With CEREC, the prepared tooth is scanned with a Primescan camera, the crown is designed on screen from every angle, and a milling unit in the office cuts it from a block of zirconia matched to your tooth colour. It is fitted, polished and cemented the same day. Most crown and bridge treatments are finished in a single visit.

Only the treatment you need

The problem: being told you need thousands of dollars of work, and having to take it on trust.

“Our goal is to take care of the needs, no more, no less,” as Dr. Jim Cope once put it. Patients who come in for a second opinion often find that a more conservative plan is the better one, and “conservative” is a word that turns up in their reviews.

Full arch & All-on-4

A full set of fixed teeth, on four implants.

For people who have lost most of their teeth, or are tired of a denture that slips. Four implants are placed in the jaw, the titanium fuses with the bone, and a fixed set of teeth is attached to them. The teeth go in on the day of the surgery.

  1. An evaluation of your mouth, jawbone and medical history, to confirm All-on-4 is the right choice
  2. Scans and impressions of your bite; any extractions arranged, and your teeth made by a trusted lab
  3. Implants placed with computer-assisted guidance, under sedation and local anaesthetic
  4. Your teeth attached the same day. About twice a year the dentist removes them to clean and check the fit

Will it feel like my own teeth?

It is designed to. After a short adjustment most patients find their new teeth feel and work very much like natural ones.

I am only missing a few teeth.

Then All-on-4 is probably not the answer. It is meant for people who have lost all or most of their teeth, and there are better options for a few: a single implant, several implants, or a bridge.

Does the surgery hurt?

It is done under sedation and local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during it. Afterwards, any soreness or swelling is usually short-lived and handled with medication.

A closer look at four of them.

Mini dental implants

A narrow titanium post with a ball-shaped head. A socket with a rubber O-ring sits in the base of the denture and snaps over it, holding the denture in place.

Zirconia veneers

Thin, custom-made veneers bonded to the front of the teeth. Usually two visits, starting with a digital impression, and little or no anaesthetic.

Take-home whitening

Clear trays made from impressions of your own teeth, worn with whitening solution for a couple of weeks. Usually two visits: one for impressions, one for the fit.

Deep cleaning

Scaling and root planing for gum disease, done one quarter of the mouth at a time while the area is numb, removing tartar above and below the gum line.

In pain? Call. It is usually the same day.

When in doubt, it does not hurt to call and explain. Drs. Austin and Ben Cope and the team will do their best to get you treated quickly, usually the same day.

From Highway 50: take the Latrobe Road exit south. Drive one mile and turn right onto Suncast Lane, the second entrance to the business park.

From El Dorado Hills Blvd: head south under the freeway, where it becomes Latrobe Road, then continue one mile to Suncast Lane.

Turn left into the first driveway. We are the second building on the left, and the front door faces the car park.

Common questions

What people ask before they book.

Do I still get numbed if I have IV sedation?

Yes. The sedation medicines relax you and take away the memory of the appointment, but they are not painkillers. You are numbed only once the sedation has fully taken effect, so if needles worry you, by then you will be too relaxed to mind. The dentist then waits until you are numb before starting.

How safe is IV sedation here?

It is moderate sedation, not a general anaesthetic: you breathe on your own and are not intubated. Both doctors and Kimberly Cope, a registered nurse, are trained in it, and Kimberly's only job during the appointment is watching your vital signs, oxygen levels and IV while the dentist works. Ask for a consultation to see whether it suits you.

Something hurts or has broken. Can I be seen today?

Call the office. Emergencies are usually seen the same day. If a tooth has been knocked out, rinse it, put it in a glass of milk and call straight away, because there is a chance it can be put back. A dentist can treat the cause, which an emergency room usually cannot, and it is normally the cheaper route too.

Is All-on-4 right for me?

It is for people who have lost all or most of their teeth, or who want to move from a removable denture to fixed teeth. The first visit is an evaluation of your mouth, your jawbone and your medical history. If something needs treating first, the team arranges it so the teeth can follow as soon as possible.

How do I pay, and do you take insurance?

The office can bill most insurance plans for you, so call with your plan details. Payment is due at the time of treatment, by cash, personal check, money order or most major credit cards. For a larger treatment plan, talk to the office about arrangements, or apply for CareCredit and pay monthly.
